Makoto Yoshida
Consultant in English Language Math Teaching

Makoto Yoshida was president of the New Jersey Association of Teachers of Mathematics (AMTNJ) in 2017. He is a co-owner of East West Math LLC in Harrison, New Jersey, a center that provides consulting and professional development for math and lesson design, in addition to online courses. He also serves as president of Global Education Resources, which provides consulting services on lesson study and math instruction.

Yoshida helps teachers of this discipline in elementary and secondary schools improve their knowledge about the classroom content and instruction. His workshops and presentations for teacher professional learning promote the basic approach to teaching and problem-solving in it and the study of lessons.

Yoshida works as a consultant and professional development provider for The Consortium for Policy Research in Education (CPRE) at Teachers College to improve the content knowledge and classroom instruction of high school math teachers in Thailand. He also collaborates at the University of Tokyo Gakugei (Tokyo, Japan) to advance the understanding of the study of lessons from mathematics educators in countries outside of Japan. In addition to this, he works in schools in New Jersey and New York.

It is worth mentioning that Yoshida’s doctoral dissertation on lesson study in Japan, presented to the University of Chicago, helped introduce lesson study in the United States. In his thesis research, he coined the term lesson study, a translation of the original Japanese term jugyokenkyu . He is considered one of the leading lesson study researchers and educators in the US.
